Elixir: n (i'lks ir):
{I just realized I don't own a dictionary. What is this world coming to?}
1)anything that purports to be a sovereign remedy; panacea
{of course, blueberry elixir is the most sovereign of remedies}
2) a substance believed to cure all ills
{blueberries have antioxidants, right? I'm saving people one blueberry elixir at a time}
3) (Chemistry / Alchemy) an alchemical preparation supposed to be capable of prolonging life indefinitely (elixir of life) or of transmuting base metals into gold.
{huh? refer to definition #2.}
Blueberry Elixir : the remedy for friends and foes alike (!)
FYI: it doesn't really taste like blueberries. It's like twang and sweet collided.
1 pint blueberries
2/3 cup red wine vinegar
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup wildflower honey
Mix 1 pint of blueberries and vinegar in a glass bowl. Refrigerate for three days, stirring every once in awhile.
After three days, in same bowl with liquid, mash berries with the back of a spoon.
Using a sieve lined with cheesecloth, drain berries. Continue to press until all liquid has been drained. You should have exactly 1 cup of liquid. If you don't, continue to mash berries, be patient, do laundry, come back and mash some more.
Add liquid, sugar, and honey to a saucepan and bring to a low boil. Continue to simmer for 30-45 minutes. Cool and refrigerate.
The ways I am using it:
1) on vanilla ice cream
2) drizzled on fresh ricotta and served with grilled bread
3) mixed into plain yogurt and granola
4) add a tiny bit to prosecco (the elixir is not blue, do not worry)
5) add to sparking water
